Trade Deals & Human Rights

Posted in uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on February 2, 2021 by andelino

Mid-December 2019, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China was not planning to sign an investment deal with Europe that had been in the works since 2013. China was a “developing economy,” he said, and it shouldn’t be made to abide by the same standards as more advanced European economies. It looked like the deal was dead.

But on Dec. 30, 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted a video conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and other EU leaders. After the conference, they released a bombshell announcement: “The EU and China concluded in principle the negotiations for a Comprehensive Agreement on Investment.”

Why the “change in heart” by the Chinese? Why, after stalling for seven years, did Chairman Xi make a rare “personal” intervention to seal this “mammoth deal?”

Why did the Europeans, who present themselves as champions of “human rights and fair labor”, agree to more deeply intertwine their economy with that of the “shamelessly brutal” Chinese Communist Party?

And what does this mean for the United States’ efforts to pressure China into accepting a rules-based international economic model? These are vital questions with answers that have implications for all of us.

The deal’s main accomplishment is that it makes it easier for European companies to operate in China. It is also billed as doing the reverse—facilitating operations of Chinese firms in Europe—but in reality Europe has behaved far more fairly than China toward multinationals. So the “Comprehensive Agreement on Investment” was mainly about China assenting to correct that imbalance and give EU companies a more equal footing.

For decades, if a European firm wished to operate in China, it would have to set up a joint venture with a Chinese company and in the process, share intellectual property and sensitive technology. This was an appalling requirement. But if EU companies wanted access to China’s lucrative markets, they had no choice but to comply. Now the Chinese have agreed to end this requirement for EU companies in certain key industries including vehicles, computing services and health.

China also agreed to take the mask off its notoriously secretive government subsidies, and open China up to the EU’s various banks.

These are massive “concessions” from China. They would level the playing field to an unprecedented degree. The European Commission issued a statement calling the deal “the most ambitious outcome that China has ever agreed with a third country or economy.”

So why did China’s leadership agree to these unprecedented terms?

One of the main reasons this deal took so long to formalize was because China was stalling. The Chinese had become very used to breaking all the rules they could to give themselves trade advantages, so they stalled, understandably unwilling to offer the concessions to Europe that this deal requires.

But over the last year, China came under heavy criticism by several nations including the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. These nations are sounding the alarm over China’s “unlawful trade practices, deceitfulness with the coronavirus, atrocious human rights record in Xinjiang, illegal crackdown on Hong Kong, bullying of Taiwan, predatory loans to poor nations, and more.”

The English-speaking nations have sought to convince more countries to work with them to pressure China into adopting a liberal, rules-based international economic standard. And for a time, it seemed to be working. Just a month ago, the European Union called for a U.S.-EU dialogue to discuss the strategic challenge presented by China’s growing international assertiveness.”

So the Chinese feared that the ire of the U.S. could pull Europe in and leave China isolated from the West. It was that fear that prompted the Chinese to agree—albeit hollowly—to the concessions they made to Europe. And it was that same fear that spurred Xi Jinping to personally intervene to help clinch the “Comprehensive Agreement on Investment.”

Also relevant is that Chairman Xi expects Joe Biden to become president of the U.S. Xi believes Biden will reverse course on many measures the Trump administration has taken against Europe. For example, just last week, the Trump administration stepped up its trade dispute with Europe over aircraft subsidies and increased tariffs on Europe’s aircraft parts and wine.

Xi reckons that a Biden presidency would end such measures and work to strengthen trans-Atlantic ties. So he moved quickly on the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, clinching it before Biden could assume office and begin coaxing Europe back toward America.

“Preventing a transatlantic front has been a top priority for the Chinese leadership and likely explains Xi Jinping’s eleventh-hour intervention to seal a deal. My take on the EU-China investment agreement for @laurnorman @wsj — Noah Barkin (@noahbarkin) December 30, 2020

So China’s motivations are clear. But the question about Europe remains.

The leaders and peoples of Europe often portray themselves as champions of human rights and international labor standards. And they know very well that the Chinese economy is run partly on slave labor. In the Xinjiang region, China has over a million members of the Muslim Uyghur minority detained in concentration camps, and many are bused around to various parts of Xinjiang and elsewhere in China to provide what often amounts to slave labor.

Salih Hudayar, the prime minister-in-exile of this region, which he and other Uyghurs call “East Turkistan” said: “Many of the goods that are made in China, especially like clothes, even the iPhones that we use, certain components are made with the forced labor of the Uyghurs and other peoples.”

This chilling statement is confirmed by research from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. Using satellite imagery and on-the-ground reporting, it estimates that from 2017 to 2019 alone, some 80,000 Uyghur slave laborers were shipped “directly from detention camps” to other locations in China.

“Uyghurs for Sale: Groundbreaking Report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute — Kaisu Pajari (@kmpajarigmailco) November 23, 2020

Merkel, Macron and other Europeans would be well aware of these facts. And they have also seen China’s unlawful crackdown on Hong Kong, illegal bullying in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, repression of its general population, and even its wolf warrior diplomacy right there in Europe.

But still the Europeans sealed this deal that tacitly signs off on China’s abuses of its people and myriad other crimes. It is true that the EU expressed concerns about China’s behavior. But such statements ring just as hollow as China’s promises to consider possibly changing some of its practices.

The truth is that by signing this deal, European leaders have shown that they care less about how many Uyghurs are “detained, tortured, raped, sterilized and killed” than they do about better tapping into the Chinese markets—and reducing economic dependence on America.

To see Europe compromise so shamefully by making this deal with China may seem surprising. But this is actually the kind of development we should expect to see more and more in the months and years ahead.

Russia and Japan will also join this globe-girdling economic bloc. Together these countries will come to control worldwide trade and strangle America and some of its allies. When it happens, “there will be no help or sympathy from Asia.”

We should not be surprised to see Europe willingly ignore China’s terrible “human rights abuses and illegal trade practices.” We should actually expect the ties now strengthening between the EU and China to only grow more robust.

And even as China grows more powerful, aggressive and malicious, we should expect Europe to increasingly side with Beijing, and against America.

Cuban Political Prisoners

Che Obama 18

At a joint press conference with El Che Obama, Cuban “dictator” Raúl Castro was asked about “political prisoners” being held by his government.

“Why are there Cuban political prisoners in your country?” CNN reporter Jim Acosta asked.

Raúl Castro immediately went off on the question saying, “Give me the list right now of political prisoners to let go of them. Mention it now, which political prisoners?”

“Tell me the name or the names or when we conclude the press conference you give me a list of the prisoners. And if there are political prisoners then before night falls, they will be free. There!” said the dictator.

When Obama was asked by ABC News anchor David Muir “if he would provide Castro with a list of political prisoners to call the dictator’s public bluff,” Obama refused.

“The truth of the matter is, we’ve given him lists in the past,” Obama said, “and they have responded intermittently to our engagement. And this, I think, is an example of why it was my belief that this would be a more successful mechanism for us to advance the values that we care about than an embargo, and silence, and no communications.”

That begs the question then “why didn’t Obama bring a copy of the past list given to Castro with him to Cuba?”

Earlier in the press conference Castro also said, “Both countries can cooperate and coexist in a civilized manner that is mutually beneficial and rise above the differences we have and will likely continue to have.”

Issues regarding “human rights” remain one of the core “disagreements” between the U.S. and Cuba in spite of “normalized” relations via the reestablishment of “diplomatic” ties.

Shortly before Obama’s arrival in Havana, several protesters from “The Ladies In White” were violently arrested by Cuban authorities.

Obama is to be given “credit” for raising the issues of “civil liberties and free elections” with Raúl Castro, and saying that Cubans should be “free to speak their minds and protest” against their government without fear of “arbitrary detentions.”

Being raised and educated by “liberal” Progressives who have argued for nearly “six” decades that Cuba is a socialist “paradise,” Obama did not “go” far enough.

Che Obama 15

Here are some of the questions “weak, limply and wimpy” El Che Obama should have “asked” Raúl Castro:

  1. When will you allow free and open elections to be held in Cuba, as promised by your brother Fidel shortly after he took command of the country in 1959? How long will the Cuban people have to wait to exercise this basic right of a democracy?
  1. When will you open your government’s archives to allow historians and others to document just how many Cubans have been executed at the order of your brother and other communist officials? The figure given in “The Black Book of Communism” is between 15,000 and 17,000. Is that too high or too low an estimate?
  1. When will you release all political prisoners, especially the husbands, sons, fathers, and friends of the “Ladies in White,” who have provided you with the names of those who are in jail for speaking out for libertad? “The Black Book of Communism” estimates that 100,000 Cubans have been placed in prisons and forced labor camps for “political” reasons. Is that figure too high or too low?
  1. When will you allow the free market to truly operate in Cuba so that the average worker will be able to earn a decent wage rather than the penurious $20 a month he presently receives? When will you allow credit cards—an essential instrument of modern commerce—to be used and accepted? When will you allow open Internet and Wifi for Cuban people?
  1. When will your brother Fidel admit that Che Guevara—admired by many young Americans—was not a high-minded revolutionary, but a cold-blooded murderer who functioned as Fidel’s personal executioner? Isn’t it true that he was a great admirer of China’s Cultural Revolution and that it was he, not Fidel, who invented Cuba’s first “corrective labor camp”—i.e., a gulag?
  1. Isn’t it true that Cuba is not a socialist “paradise,” but a troubled third-world country ruled by a communist regime that discourages religion, denies freedom of the press and of speech, bars legitimate elections, treats the judiciary as a lapdog, and reveres the Communist Party above all things?

Any “meaningful and enduring” relationship between Cuba and America must be based on the “truth.” And the truth about what “communism” has done to the Cuban people for nearly sixty years has “yet to be told.”

This is the hand of a weak, limply and wimpy leader…

Che Obama 07

“Let’s give a big hand to this stupid gringo. He sold out America for a smile and a photo op.”

Obama: They make fun of me. They say I am weak, limply and wimpy. They say I was born in Africa and I am Michelle’s bitch. Oh, Godfather, I don’t know what to do, I don’t know what to do…

Raúl: You can act like a Man!  What’s the matter with you? Is this what you’ve become, a Hollywood Finocchio who cries like a woman? “Oh, what do I do? What do I do?” What is that nonsense? Ridiculous!

Che Obama 01Obama Fails Cuban Freedom Again
By Raoul Lowery Contreras

Susan Rice, President Barack Obama’s National Security Advisor, looked into the television camera and “declared” that the American 55-year-long “trade embargo with Cuba had failed.”

President Obama’s history-making “visit” this week to Cuba, she said, lays to rest that 55-year-long “failure.” She and the president “neglected” to mention that it was President John F. Kennedy, a Democrat, who “created and implemented” the embargo.

Che Obama 03

She’s “wrong.” Obama’s visit symbolizes his “failure to help Cubans be free,” not that the “embargo” failed.

President Obama’s visit to Cuba “reflects” the failure of Obama’s “policy” towards Cuba that, while foreseen for the past seven years, is a bitter “insult” to the Cubans who have risked their lives to “escape” from the island dictatorship.

It also “insults” all people who strive for “liberty” for all.

Thousands of Cubans are in “prison” for demanding “human rights.” Some were “arrested” even as President Obama’s Air Force One was “in the air on the way to Havana” according to reports.

Che Obama 06

A mural in Havana depicting (from left) Cuban Communist party founder, Julio Antonio Mella, and revolutionary leaders Camilo Cienfuegos and Che Guevara.

Cuba’s “Communist” apparatchiks are busy “negotiating” business deals with China, “begging” Venezuela for free oil, “making” sure Cubans do not have “access” to the Internet, and “filling” their prisons with people seeking “democratic” rights.

Dictator Raul Castro says the United States owes Cuba billions for the “damage” he claims the United States “inflicted” with John F. Kennedy’s “embargo.” That, by the way, is an “admission” that the embargo worked “contrary” to Susan Rice’s falsities.

Americans have been “imprisoned” by Cuba on flimsy and false charges for years, even as more than five dozen “convicted and/or charged” American criminals “live and work” in Cuba under the dictatorship’s “protection and on its payroll.”

Cuba Obama 03

President Obama had fantastic “leverage” and opportunities to “negotiate” terms with Cuba that “benefited” the Cuban people by making the “dictatorship” embark on new “paradigms of governance” that would benefit the Cuban people.

That is, if he had “seriously” negotiated for “freedom” for all.

If you, Raul Castro, want the embargo ended then quit arresting people every weekend when they march for free speech and democratic elections. Raul, if you want Americans to come to Cuba to visit and spend money, fine, but you have to allow American communications companies to enter Cuba with their modern services and an Internet that you do not interfere with.

If you want Americans to come to Cuba for any reason, for business or tourism, you must put every American criminal hiding in Cuba on a plane we will send at no cost to Cuba to bring them back escorted by U.S. Marshals. That includes the cop killer and the terror bomber.

If you want full diplomatic relations with the United States and unrestricted trade relations, you must allow full ingress and egress to Cuba for Cubans.

You must compensate all claims proved for property expropriated by your government of Americans, American and foreign companies, Cubans and Cuban companies on January 1st, 1959, or after.

If you move your people towards freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association, political freedom, free political parties and elections, and return all convicted or charged American criminals to the United States, President Obama will visit Cuba and watch a baseball game with you.

Unfortunately, we do not have a president who wanted “anything” from Cuba. He only wants future “leftist” historians to write well about his “presidency” like the mainstream American “press” does as he visits Cuba.

Che Obama 02

That mainstream press agrees with his Cuban “gift” policy as it does with his closing our naval base at “Guantanamo Bay” and its prison for “enemy” combatants of the ongoing war on “terrorism.”

The president’s people point to public “polling” that says a majority of Americans “support” his one-sided gifts to the Cuban dictatorship.

What they don’t “mention” is that Congress is the “only” institution that can “relieve, change, or end the embargo.”

Obama can “lift” visit restrictions on people, he can “allow” airlines to go to Cuba because only he can “deal” with foreign countries but he cannot “end the embargo” on his own.

Che Obama 05

Fridge magnets, including one of Barack Obama, at a market in Havana ahead of the US president’s visit.

One can only “hope” that the President of the United States is “uncomfortable” in Havana while Cubans are in “prison” for the crime of “asking” for freedom.

The president could have “forced” the Cuban government to “ease” restrictions on freedom that Americans “cherish” and he did not.

He simply isn’t “capable” of being a “freedom fighter” even on a “philosophical” level.

Viva Cuba Libre!

I understand a Mariachi version of the “Star Spangled Banner” was played when “Che Obama” landed on the tarmac of the Cuban Airport.

North Korea Survivor

Posted in uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on December 28, 2014 by andelino
Yeonmi Park 04

Dictator Kim Jong-un.

Dictator Kim Jong-un would really “hate” for you to watch this “video” which is exactly why you “should” watch it.

At the young age 21, North Korean Yeonmi Park is a brand “new” activist. She’s also a North Korean “survivor.”

Yeonmi Park 01

Listening to her speak about the “atrocious and horrible” things she’s lived through is “pretty” heartbreaking.

At the age of nine she saw her friend’s mother “punished” with death for a crime that in most countries is just a normal, “everyday” activity.

Her crime: Watching a “Hollywood” movie. This is just one “reason” North Koreans live in “fear” for their lives.

Yeonmi’s own mother was “forced” to make a horrible “rape” compromise to “protect” her daughter. To hear the full story of her “escape” from North Korea, watch the video:

Here is a Transcript:

Yeonmi Park 00

I have to do this because this is not me speaking. This is the people who want to tell the world what they want to say. North Korea is an unimaginable country. There is only one channel on TV. There is only one Internet. We aren’t afraid to sing, say, wear, or think what we want. North Korea is the only country in the world that executes people for making unauthorized international phone calls. North Koreans are being terrorized today. When I was growing up in North Korea, I never saw anything about love stories between men and women. No books, no songs, no press. No movies about love stories.

Yeonmi Park 03

There is no Romeo and Juliet. Every story was propaganda to brainwash us about the Kim dictators. I was born in 1993 and I was abducted at birth, even before I knew the words freedom or human rights. North Korea is so desperately seeking and dying for freedom at this moment. When I was nine years old, I saw my friend’s mother publicly executed. Her crime: watching a Hollywood movie. Expressing doubt about the cruelness of the regime can get three generations of a family imprisoned or executed. When I was four years old, I was warned by my mother not to even whisper.

Yeonmi Park 07

The birds and mice couldn’t hear me. I admit it. I thought the North Korean dictator could read my mind. My father died in China after we escaped North Korea and I had to bury him at 3:00 a.m. in secret. I was 14 years old. I couldn’t even cry. I was afraid to be sent back to North Korea. The day I escaped North Korea, I saw my mother raped. The rapist was a Chinese broker. He targeted me. I was 13 years old. There is a saying in North Korea, “when men are weak, our mothers are strong.” My mother allowed herself to be raped in order to protect me. North Korean refugees, about three hundred thousand are vulnerable in China. 70% of North Korean women and teenage girls are being victimized, sometimes sold for as little as 200 dollars.

Yeonmi Park 06

We walked across the Gobi desert following a compass. When this stopped working, we followed the stars to freedom. I felt only the stars would lead us. Mongolia was our freedom moment. Death or dignity. And with the knives, we were prepared to kill ourselves if we were going to be sent back to North Korea. We wanted to live as humans. People often ask me, “how can you help North Koreans?” There are many ways but I would like to mention three for now. One, educate yourself so that you can raise awareness about human crisis in North Korea. Two, help and support North Korean refugees who are trying to escape to freedom. Three, petition China’s on repatriation. We have to shine a light on the darkest place in the world.

Yeonmi Park 05

It isn’t just North Korean human rights, it’s our rights that North Korean dictators have violated for seven decades. We need governments all around the world to put pressure on China to stop repatriation. In particular, Chinese delegates of One Young World, can play a part by speaking up. North Korea is indescribable. No humans deserve to be oppressed just because of their birth place. We need to focus less on the regime and more on the people who are being forgotten. One Young World, we are the ones who make them visible. Fellow delegates, please join me as you make this a global movement to free North Koreans. When I was crossing the Gobi desert, scared of dying, I thought nobody in this world cared. It seemed that only the stars were with me. But you have listened to my story. You have cared. Thank you very much.

Yeonmi Park 08

As Yeonmi “points” out, there are about 300,000 North Korean “refugees” in China who are “vulnerable.”

70% of North Korean “women and teenage” girls who have “escaped” into China are being “victimized and trafficked,” sometimes sold for as little as $200.

Even “escaping” into China isn’t the “safe” haven it should be.

Yeonmi Park’s speech was given at the One Young World conference in Dublin and uploaded to the conference’s YouTube channel.

Yeonmi Park 09

Here’s an article with more info about her story and her activism, and how you can follow her on Twitter to show your support.

So what can people do to “help” put an end to this 7-decade-long “human rights” violation?

Yeonmi Park 10

Yeonmi Park in Seoul, where she now studies and raises awareness for the plight of her compatriots in North Korea.

Here are Yeonmi’s requests:

Educate yourself so that you can raise awareness about the human crisis in North Korea.

Help and support North Korean refugees who are trying to escape to freedom.

Petition on China’s repatriation of North Korean citizens. We need governments all around the world to put pressure on China to stop repatriation.

Yeonmi Park 02

Just by “watching” this video, you’re “already” doing #1.

Regardless of the excuses made by his apologists, Obama’s contextual implication is clear…nothing good in the United States can ever hope to exist without the good graces of Government. Without his teleprompter, Obama spoke from his heart, from his soul. He spoke from a worldview which has existed from the dawn of man.

Indeed, his view comes from the basic “rule” that has existed throughout history. I hearken back through the annuls of history the long list of rulers who saw themselves as either divine or vested with divine rights to rule over mere mortals: the pharaohs, the emperors, the ones who dared rule others by claiming to be gods, the direct descendants of gods, or the chosen instruments of a divine being.

Granted, the devout Marxist does not believe in “God.” The Marxist cannot attest to a higher, heavenly being to which all men must someday answer; a God who governs in the affairs of men, a God Who has prescribed His Own Immutable Truth and Law for happy living. Rather, the Marxist sees mankind as product of a gradual millennial-old process of accidental evolution from some primordial pond scum — albeit the highest order of life (at least on this planet). And, according to the heart of hearts of a Marxist, it is merely survival of the fittest; Might makes right.

Whoever is capable of wielding power decides what truth is and what the laws shall be. To the Marxist, Government is the highest order and every man must eventual answer to the Collective. Ergo, Government is the source of all “good.” Obama is a Marxist. When he opens his mouth away from a teleprompter or in front of his acolytes, he makes this fact abundantly clear to all who will have the courage to face the truth: Obama is a Marxist and he will not rest until we all bow to his god – “the Government.”

I’m no Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. I’ve never actually started my own business. I’ve usually worked for others or I have sacrificed in the service of a nation where all who have a smart idea and/or are willing to work hard can (and should) excel and reap the substance of their risks and labors. But I know that in my own life, in small ways, I have accomplished and built things…and I KNOW that I cannot take complete credit. Rather, any good thing that I have accomplished in my life is a direct result of the Provision made to me by my Gracious Creator.

My God is named “Yahweh” — the same God worshipped by (or at the very least acknowledged by) the Founders and Framers of our Republic. My God has prescribed Truth and Law and has communicated it to us for our benefit. Everything on this planet was made by Him and belongs to Him according to His purpose. He granted us our lives, our liberty (by way of the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus the Messiah) to pursue the desires of our hearts — the GOOD desires which He gave us — for His purposes.

And He wishes for us to benefit from the fruits of our labors and to bless others as His Spirit (not government) guides us. He is Love and he created us as objects of His Love. So, when we use our talents to create great things for the benefit of all mankind — and reap a just reward for our efforts (usually determined by the value others are willing to assess based on the rewards they reaped for their efforts) — then God receives (or at least should receive) the praise…not Obama, not some politician, not the swarms of faceless bureaucrats who stand at the ready to “…harass our people, and eat out their substance.”

I am no Marxist. I am an American, a sovereign citizen who has delegated a limited set of enumerated powers to a Republic founded on the prime principles that there is a God, He governs in the affairs of men, and He has authored an immutable truth and natural laws which we are allowed to violate at our own peril and to which our municipal laws must comply to be considered “just” and “moral.”

This same God has issued a warning to people like Obama:

I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me.”

“You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God…”

“You shall not murder.” (…especially the defenseless child in their mother’s womb who have barely begun to live).

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” (Or as you might call it “telling good stories”…Calling him a felon for your own re-election, as ONE example…).

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house…or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” (…or encourage others to covet his belongings while promising to “spread the wealth around.”).

“You shall not steal.” (…even if it is for a “good cause”…stealing is stealing even if you get a government to do it on your behalf).

Yes, Barrack Obama, somebody else made this great country happen — this great nation which has been only the second “exception” to the rule of human history (which is tyranny). And, whether you believe in Him or not is immaterial. He does exist and one day you will have to answer to Him for every though, word and deed you have had, said or done.

Given what I’ve heard you say and what I’ve seen you do, it is not looking too good for you in eternity. Among your many crimes, you are destroying (for the sake of your “god”) a Republic which was — at its founding — dedicated to “His Glory and Honor.”

I pray you will repent, confess your sins and accept His gracious forgiveness. I pray you will undo the damage you have done or at least stand aside and allow us who value His gift to save what remains. That said I cannot make that decision for you, for it is written:

He who believes in Him (Jesus, God’s Son) is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

The choice is yours, but be warned: you shall reap what you sow…in this life and the next. In the meantime, do not expect me to bow to your “god.” I hereby make a Declaration that I am “in dependence” of MY own Good Providence (His Name be Praised).

I do not call you “President” because you are not eligible in accordance with the provisions of the United States Constitution and every relevant ruling by the United States Supreme Court to date.

“You Didn’t Build That? …So Who Gets the Credit?” I’ve been searching for a way to say essentially the same thing and now I don’t have to. Socialists and Marxists like you not only fail to understand or appreciate individual accomplishment and responsibility, they absolutely reject the concept that “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Psalm 127:1

It’s a Miracle!

According to Census figures, some 200,000 small businesses disappeared from the rolls between 2008 and 2010. Those businesses were responsible for some three million jobs. The Obama administration claims that they’re moving in the right direction – but the direction of the economy is now reversing itself.

Not surprisingly, Gallup finds that business owners are turning on President Obama. The national poll showed a 59-35 disapproval/approval split. Workers are split in favor of Obama, thanks in large part to Obama’s heavy emphasis on class warfare.

It is no coincidence that government spending has expanded dramatically during the same period that private sector businesses were going under. And it is no coincidence that, even as the economy falls back into a slump, from the mildest recovery in our lifetime, Obama believes that only more government spending can solve the problem.

Live Action, a pro-life group based in San Jose, California, went undercover to discover a troubling trend that is occurring across the globe — sex-selection abortion (the process of purposefully terminating a pregnancy based solely on the child’s gender). While this phenomenon is known to be occurring in China, among other nations, the organization claims that it’s also happening here in the United States of America.

In part one of a new video series entitled “Gendercide: Sex Selection in America,” the group, which also launched to accompany the sting operation, visits an Austin, Texas, Planned Parenthood for an undercover investigation.

The findings may disturb you.

“This was a multi-state, national investigation demonstrating that this is a widespread problem across our country,” Live Action president Lila Rose said in an interview with The Daily Caller on Monday. “First of all, the statistics and studies indicate that we are adding to the growing problem across the world of sex-selective targeting of unborn girls for abortion. We are going to be demonstrating — starting with this video from Texas — that the abortion industry in the United States is aiding and abetting this horrific problem.”

It was in April 2012 that Rose’s group investigated these abortion clinics to see what would happen if employees were asked about aborting based on gender. In part one, which was released this week, a Planned Parenthood employee named “Rebecca” can be seen speaking with the undercover woman, who makes it clear that she only wants to abort her child if, indeed, it is a female.

“In this video, what is astounding is that Rebecca, the Planned Parenthood counselor, starts arranging with the actor about how to get a late-term abortion,” Rose continued in her interview with the Daily Caller. “To wait until her pregnancy is so developed that — and using Medicaid for this, using the state to pay for the ultrasound to determine the gender, and then to do a late term abortion if it was a little girl.”

As Rose notes, the employee seems completely unfazed by the woman’s gender-based plans and proceeds to discuss the legalities of abortion, specifically the time-frame during which the baby’s sex is detectable and how much time the woman has to go through with the procedure.

The conversation between Rebecca and the actress also turns to Medicaid, which the employee claims can be used to help the potential patient determine the sex of her baby so that she can later abort if it is a female. This, of course, would purportedly be done covertly (i.e. without telling doctors of the intent to abort) so that the sonograms can be covered by government insurance before letting doctors know of the intention to abort.

“I have actually applied for Medicaid — got on Medicaid — as if I was going to continue my pregnancy. Went through the OB/GYN and then me and my husband decided that we were going to go ahead and terminate,” Rebecca explained, recounting her own experience. “We terminated, and I still stayed on Medicaid and just got on birth control. Right after I got on birth control, I just stopped using it.”

Then, the faux patient asked, “So, um, so then I could, um, then we could probably, you’re thinking, if we did that, we could probably get pregnant again soon after?”

Rebecca answered affirmatively and said that she has had four children and two abortions and that getting pregnant again soon after is absolutely permissible.

Obama Doctrine Failure

Posted in uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on February 27, 2012 by andelino

Three years ago, President Barack Obama set forth to recast American foreign policy in an image of his own design. It was one in which the White House engaged with enemies and undercut allies, apologized for American exceptionalism, and favored the “soft power” of treaties and international organizations. This “Obama Doctrine” was tailor made to burnish America’s supposedly flagging reputation on the world stage. Today we are seeing the disastrous results of a doctrine gone wrong.

The Middle East is a logical starting point of this Obama Doctrine retrospective, a region where the President’s soaring aspirations have been mugged by the reality on the ground. Beginning in Iran, Obama sought to engage a regime led by a man who has openly called for the destruction of Israel. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was not mollified by the President’s charm offensive, and now, even in the face of escalating sanctions, Iran is ratcheting up its rhetoric, threatening to cut off a quarter of the world’s energy supply, and marching toward a nuclear weapon. The Obama Administration’s response? An admonishment of Israel for considering a strike against the murderous Iranian regime.

Syria, too, is yet another example of the Obama Doctrine failure. The President entered office hoping to engage the hostile regime of Bashar al-Assad and soft-pedaled its criticism of Assad’s violent crackdown on anti-government protesters. The result? Syria ordered the attack on the U.S. embassy in Damascus, threatened the U.S. ambassador, and to date has killed more than 7,500 Syrians who are standing against the autocratic government.

The President’s failure to discern friend from foe in foreign affairs left it flatfooted in the Arab Spring awakening last year, as well, and that too has put America at a loss. In Egypt, the President hesitated when the people called for Hosni Mubarak’s ouster, but wound up supporting his overthrow in the end. Now, though, the Muslim Brotherhood is within inches of grasping power, the country’s peace treaty with Israel is being questioned, and pro-democracy American workers there are facing criminal trial. In Libya, the President was forced into action by European allies, withdrew as quickly as possible, and the country is seeing increased instability as its militias are being accused of war crimes. None of the above is in America’s interests.

In each instance, the Obama Administration was caught leading from behind, uncertain of the role the United States should play or how to react, instead of taking clear, assertive action to defend U.S. interests. Unfortunately, the one area where the President does display clarity is where his political interests come into play. That, too, has left American interests worse for wear.

In Afghanistan, the President has insisted on a speedy withdrawal of U.S. forces while pursuing negotiations with the Taliban — a veritable enemy that has launched lethal attacks against American troops. Neither tactic is a strategy for victory or for preventing Afghanistan from once again becoming a safe haven for terrorists. In the middle of this tinderbox, anti-American protests are flaring after the apparent burning of Korans at a U.S. military base. The President issued an apology, yet the Taliban is calling for retaliation against the United States — and that is the same Taliban which Vice President Joe Biden said ”is not our enemy.”

Iraq, too, has devolved into violence following the President’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops. It has been just over two months since the last U.S. forces left Iraq, and in that time the country has witnessed ongoing insurgent attacks, a mushrooming political crisis, and the threat of a civil war which will aid neighboring Iran.

As these international threats simmer to a boil, the President is undercutting America’s ability to defend its interests at home and abroad. Under Obama’s new budget, the military faces nearly half a trillion dollars in cuts, on top of $400 billion the President has already slashed. That does not include the half trillion in funding that will have to be cut under the debt limit agreement Congress reached last summer. Vital defense programs have been killed, next generation weapons will be delayed or eliminated, and troops will be reduced. And it’s all being done in the name of freeing up funding to pay for the President’s domestic agenda.

In the course of three years, President Obama has pursued a foreign policy that has left America less secure today and even more at risk tomorrow. A nuclear Iran, a failed Afghanistan and Iraq, an unfriendly Egypt, an Israel at risk, and an underfunded military are all serious concerns for the American people. Rather than continue pursuing the ill-advised Obama Doctrine, it is time for the President to put defending America first and appeasing our enemies last.

That is a doctrine the American people can depend on.

Narcissist or Merely Narcissistic?

Barack Obama: Narcissist or Merely Narcissistic?

By: Dr. Sam Vaknin

Barack Obama appears to be a narcissist. Granted, only a qualified mental health diagnostician (which I am not) can determine whether someone suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). But, in the absence of access to Barack Obama, one has to rely on his overt performance and on testimonies by his closest, nearest and dearest.

Narcissistic leaders are nefarious and their effects pernicious. They are subtle, refined, socially-adept, manipulative, possessed of thespian skills, and convincing. Both types equally lack empathy and are ruthless and relentless or driven.  Perhaps it is time to require each candidate to high office in the USA to submit to a rigorous physical and mental checkup with the results made public.

I. Upbringing and Childhood

Obama’s early life was decidedly chaotic and replete with traumatic and mentally bruising dislocations. Mixed-race marriages were even less common then. His parents went through a divorce when he was an infant (two years old). Obama saw his father only once again, before he died in a car accident. Then, his mother re-married and Obama had to relocate to Indonesia: a foreign land with a radically foreign culture, to be raised by a step-father. At the age of ten, he was whisked off to live with his maternal (white) grandparents. He saw his mother only intermittently in the following few years and then she vanished from his life in 1979. She died of cancer in 1995.

Pathological narcissism is a reaction to prolonged abuse and trauma in early childhood or early adolescence. The source of the abuse or trauma is immaterial: the perpetrators could be dysfunctional or absent parents, teachers, other adults, or peers.

II. Behavior Patterns

The narcissist:

  • Feels grandiose and self-important (e.g., exaggerates accomplishments, talents, skills, contacts, and personality traits to the point of lying, demands to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements);
  • Is obsessed with fantasies of unlimited success, fame, fearsome power or omnipotence, unequalled brilliance (the cerebral narcissist), bodily beauty or sexual performance (the somatic narcissist), or ideal, everlasting, all-conquering love or passion;
  • Firmly convinced that he or she is unique and, being special, can only be understood by, should only be treated by, or associate with, other special or unique, or high-status people (or institutions);
  • Requires excessive admiration, adulation, attention and affirmation – or, failing that, wishes to be feared and to be notorious (Narcissistic Supply);
  • Feels entitled. Demands automatic and full compliance with his or her unreasonable expectations for special and favorable priority treatment;
  • Is “interpersonally exploitative”, i.e., uses others to achieve his or her own ends;
  • Devoid of empathy. Is unable or unwilling to identify with, acknowledge, or accept the feelings, needs, preferences, priorities, and choices of others;
  • Constantly envious of others and seeks to hurt or destroy the objects of his or her frustration. Suffers from persecutory (paranoid) delusions as he or she believes that they feel the same about him or her and are likely to act similarly;
  • Behaves arrogantly and haughtily. Feels superior, omnipotent, omniscient, invincible, immune, “above the law”, and omnipresent (magical thinking). Rages when frustrated, contradicted, or confronted by people he or she considers inferior to him or her and unworthy.

Narcissism is a defense mechanism whose role is to deflect hurt and trauma from the victim’s “True Self” into a “False Self” which is omnipotent, invulnerable, and omniscient. This False Self is then used by the narcissist to garner narcissistic supply from his human environment. Narcissistic supply is any form of attention, both positive and negative and it is instrumental in the regulation of the narcissist’s labile sense of self-worth.

Perhaps the most immediately evident trait of patients with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is their vulnerability to criticism and disagreement. Subject to negative input, real or imagined, even to a mild rebuke, a constructive suggestion, or an offer to help, they feel injured, humiliated and empty and they react with disdain (devaluation), rage, and defiance.

From my book “Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited“:

“To avoid such intolerable pain, some patients with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) socially withdraw and feign false modesty and humility to mask their underlying grandiosity. Dysthymic and depressive disorders are common reactions to isolation and feelings of shame and inadequacy.”

Owing to their lack of empathy, disregard for others, exploitativeness, sense of entitlement, and constant need for attention (narcissistic supply), narcissists are rarely able to maintain functional and healthy interpersonal relationships.

Many narcissists are over-achievers and ambitious. Some of them are even talented and skilled. But they are incapable of team work because they cannot tolerate setbacks. They are easily frustrated and demoralized and are unable to cope with disagreement and criticism. Though some narcissists have meteoric and inspiring careers, in the long-run, all of them find it difficult to maintain long-term professional achievements and the respect and appreciation of their peers. The narcissist’s fantastic grandiosity, frequently coupled with a hypo manic mood, is typically incommensurate with his or her real accomplishments (the “grandiosity gap”).

An important distinction is between cerebral and somatic narcissists. The cerebrals derive their Narcissistic Supply from their intelligence or academic achievements and the somatics derive their Narcissistic Supply from their physique, exercise, physical or sexual prowess and romantic or physical “conquests”.

Another crucial division within the ranks of patients with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is between the classic variety (those who meet five of the nine diagnostic criteria included in the DSM), and the compensatory kind (their narcissism compensates for deep-set feelings of inferiority and lack of self-worth).

Obama displays the following behaviors, which are among the hallmarks of pathological narcissism:

Subtly misrepresents facts and expediently and opportunistically shifts positions, views, opinions, and “ideals” (e.g., about campaign finance, re-districting). These flip-flops do not cause him overt distress and are ego-syntonic (he feels justified in acting this way). Alternatively, refuses to commit to a standpoint and, in the process, evidences a lack of empathy.

Ignores data that conflict with his fantasy world, or with his inflated and grandiose self-image. This has to do with magical thinking. Obama already sees himself as president because he is firmly convinced that his dreams, thoughts, and wishes affect reality. Additionally, he denies the gap between his fantasies and his modest or limited real-life achievements (for instance, in 12 years of academic career, he hasn’t published a single scholarly paper or book).

Feels that he is above the law, incl. and especially his own laws.

Talks about himself in the 3rd person singular or uses the regal “we” and craves to be the exclusive center of attention, even adulation

Has a messianic-cosmic vision of himself and his life and his “mission”. Consequently, sets unrealistic goals within unrealistic timeframes.

Sets ever more complex rules in a convoluted world of grandiose fantasies with its own language (jargon)

Displays false modesty and unctuous “folksiness” but unable to sustain these behaviors (the persona, or mask) for long. It slips and the true Obama is revealed: haughty, aloof, distant, and disdainful of simple folk and their lives.

Sublimates aggression and holds grudges.

Behaves as an eternal adolescent (e.g., his choice of language, youthful image he projects, demands indulgence and feels entitled to special treatment, even though his objective accomplishments do not justify it).

III. Body Language

Many complain of the incredible deceptive powers of the narcissist. They find themselves involved with narcissists (emotionally, in business, or otherwise) before they have a chance to discover their true character. Shocked by the later revelation, they mourn their inability to separate from the narcissist and their gullibility.

Narcissists are an elusive breed, hard to spot, harder to pinpoint, impossible to capture. Even an experienced mental health diagnostician with unmitigated access to the record and to the person examined would find it fiendishly difficult to determine with any degree of certainty whether someone suffers from a full-fledged Narcissistic Personality Disorder – or merely possesses narcissistic traits, a narcissistic style, a personality structure (“character”), or a narcissistic “overlay” superimposed on another mental health problem.

Moreover, it is important to distinguish between traits and behavior patterns that are independent of the patient’s cultural-social context (i.e., which are inherent, or idiosyncratic) – and reactive patterns, or conformity to cultural and social morals and norms. Reactions to severe life crises or circumstances are also often characterized by transient pathological narcissism, for instance (Ronningstam and Gunderson, 1996). But such reactions do not a narcissist make.

When a person belongs to a society or culture that has often been described as narcissistic by scholars (such as Theodore Millon) and social thinkers (e.g., Christopher Lasch) – how much of his behavior can be attributed to his milieu and which of his traits are really his?

The Narcissistic Personality Disorder is rigorously defined in the DSM IV-TR with a set of strict criteria and differential diagnoses.

Narcissism is regarded by many scholars to be an adaptative strategy (“healthy narcissism”). It is considered pathological in the clinical sense only when it becomes a rigid personality structure replete with a series of primitive defense mechanisms (such as splitting, projection, projective identification, or intellectualization) – and when it leads to dysfunctions in one or more areas of the patient’s life.

Pathological narcissism is the art of deception. The narcissist projects a False Self and manages all his social interactions through this concocted fictional construct.

When the narcissist reveals his true colors, it is usually far too late. His victims are unable to separate from him. They are frustrated by this acquired helplessness and angry at themselves for having they failed to see through the narcissist earlier on.

But the narcissist does emit subtle, almost subliminal, signals (“presenting symptoms”) even in a first or casual encounter. Compare the following list to Barack Obama’s body language during his public appearances.

These are:

“Haughty” body language – The narcissist adopts a physical posture which implies and exudes an air of superiority, seniority, hidden powers, mysteriousness, amused indifference, etc. Though the narcissist usually maintains sustained and piercing eye contact, he often refrains from physical proximity (he is “territorial”).

The narcissist takes part in social interactions – even mere banter – condescendingly, from a position of supremacy and faux “magnanimity and largesse”. But he rarely mingles socially and prefers to remain the “observer”, or the “lone wolf”.

Entitlement markers – The narcissist immediately asks for “special treatment” of some kind. Not to wait his turn, to have a longer or a shorter therapeutic session, to talk directly to authority figures (and not to their assistants or secretaries), to be granted special payment terms, to enjoy custom tailored arrangements – or to get served first.

The narcissist is the one who – vocally and demonstratively – demands the undivided attention of the head waiter in a restaurant, or monopolizes the hostess, or latches on to celebrities in a party. The narcissist reacts with rage and indignantly when denied his wishes and if treated equally with others whom he deems inferior.

Idealization or devaluation – The narcissist instantly idealizes or devalues his interlocutor. This depends on how the narcissist appraises the potential his converser has as a Narcissistic Supply Source. The narcissist flatters, adores, admires and applauds the “target” in an embarrassingly exaggerated and profuse manner – or sulks, abuses, and humiliates her.

Narcissists are polite only in the presence of a potential Supply Source. But they are unable to sustain even perfunctory civility and fast deteriorate to barbs and thinly-veiled hostility, to verbal or other violent displays of abuse, rage attacks, or cold detachment.

The “membership” posture – The narcissist always tries to “belong”. Yet, at the very same time, he maintains his stance as an outsider. The narcissist seeks to be admired for his ability to integrate and ingratiate himself without investing the efforts commensurate with such an undertaking.

For instance: if the narcissist talks to a psychologist, the narcissist first states emphatically that he never studied psychology. He then proceeds to make seemingly effortless use of obscure professional terms, thus demonstrating that he mastered the discipline all the same, as an autodidact – which proves that he is exceptionally intelligent or introspective.

In general, the narcissist always prefers show-off to substance. One of the most effective methods of exposing a narcissist is by trying to delve deeper. The narcissist is shallow, a pond pretending to be an ocean. He likes to think of himself as a Renaissance man, a “Jack of all trades.” The narcissist never admits to ignorance in any field – yet, typically, he is ignorant of them all. It is surprisingly easy to penetrate the gloss and the veneer of the narcissist’s self-proclaimed omniscience.

Bragging and false autobiographyThe narcissist brags incessantly. His speech is peppered with “I”, “my”, “myself”, and “mine”. He describes himself as intelligent, or rich, or modest, or intuitive, or creative – but always excessively, implausibly, and extraordinarily so.

The narcissist’s biography sounds unusually rich and complex. His achievements – incommensurate with his age, education, or renown. Yet, his actual condition is evidently and demonstrably incompatible with his claims. Very often, the narcissist lies or his fantasies are easily discernible. He always name-drops and appropriates other people’s experiences and accomplishments.

Emotion-free language – The narcissist likes to talk about himself and only about himself. He is not interested in others or what they have to say, unless they constitute potential “Sources of Supply” and in order to obtain said supply. He acts bored, disdainful, even angry, if he feels that they are intruding on his precious time and, thus, abusing him.

In general, the narcissist is very impatient, easily bored, with strong attention deficits – unless and until he is the topic of discussion. One can publicly dissect all aspects of the intimate life of a narcissist without repercussions, providing the discourse is not “emotionally tinted”.

If asked to relate directly to his emotions, the narcissist intellectualizes, rationalizes, speaks about himself in the third person and in a detached “scientific” tone or composes a narrative with a fictitious character in it, suspiciously autobiographical. Narcissists like to refer to themselves in mechanical terms, as efficient automata or machines.

Seriousness and sense of intrusion and coercion – The narcissist is dead serious about himself. He may possess a subtle, wry, and riotous sense of humor, scathing and cynical, but rarely is he self-deprecating. The narcissist regards himself as being on a constant mission, whose importance is cosmic and whose consequences are global. If a scientist – he is always in the throes of revolutionizing science. If a journalist – he is in the middle of the greatest story ever. If a novelist – he is on his way to a Booker or Nobel prize.

This self-misperception is not amenable to light-headedness or self-effacement. The narcissist is easily hurt and insulted (narcissistic injury). Even the most innocuous remarks or acts are interpreted by him as belittling, intruding, or coercive. His time is more valuable than others’ – therefore, it cannot be wasted on unimportant matters such as mere banter or going out for a walk.

Any suggested help, advice, or concerned inquiry are immediately cast by the narcissist as intentional humiliation, implying that the narcissist is in need of help and counsel and, thus, imperfect and less than omnipotent. Any attempt to set an agenda is, to the narcissist, an intimidating act of enslavement. In this sense, the narcissist is both schizoid and paranoid and often entertains ideas of reference.

These – the lack of empathy, the aloofness, the disdain, the sense of entitlement, the constricted sense of humor, the unequal treatment and the paranoia – render the narcissist a social misfit. The narcissist is able to provoke in his milieu, in his casual acquaintances, even in his psychotherapist, the strongest, most avid and furious hatred and revulsion. To his shock, indignation and consternation, he invariably induces in others unbridled aggression.

He is perceived to be asocial at best and, often, antisocial. This, perhaps, is the strongest presenting symptom. One feels ill at ease in the presence of a narcissist for no apparent reason. No matter how charming, intelligent, thought provoking, outgoing, easy going and social the narcissist is – he fails to secure the sympathy of others, a sympathy he is never ready, willing, or able to reciprocate.

IV. Narcissistic and psychopathic Leaders

The narcissistic or psychopathic leader is the culmination and reification of his period, culture, and civilization. He is likely to rise to prominence in narcissistic societies.

The malignant narcissist invents and then projects a false, fictitious, self for the world to fear, or to admire. He maintains a tenuous grasp on reality to start with and this is further exacerbated by the trappings of power. The narcissist’s grandiose self-delusions and fantasies of omnipotence and omniscience are supported by real life authority and the narcissist’s predilection to surround himself with obsequious sycophants.

The narcissist’s personality is so precariously balanced that he cannot tolerate even a hint of criticism and disagreement. Most narcissists are paranoid and suffer from ideas of reference (the delusion that they are being mocked or discussed when they are not). Thus, narcissists often regard themselves as “victims of persecution”.

The narcissistic leader fosters and encourages a personality cult with all the hallmarks of an institutional religion: priesthood, rites, rituals, temples, worship, catechism, mythology. The leader is this religion’s ascetic saint. He monastically denies himself earthly pleasures (or so he claims) in order to be able to dedicate himself fully to his calling.

The narcissistic leader is a monstrously inverted “Jesus”, sacrificing his life and denying himself so that his people – or humanity at large – should benefit. By surpassing and suppressing his humanity, the narcissistic leader became a distorted version of Nietzsche’s “superman”.

But being a-human or super-human also means being a-sexual and a-moral.

In this restricted sense, narcissistic leaders are post-modernist and moral relativists. They project to the masses an androgynous figure and enhance it by engendering the adoration of nudity and all things “natural” – or by strongly repressing these feelings. But what they refer to as “nature” is not natural at all.

The narcissistic leader invariably proffers an aesthetic of decadence and evil carefully orchestrated and artificial – though it is not perceived this way by him or by his followers. Narcissistic leadership is about reproduced copies, not about originals. It is about the manipulation of symbols – not about veritable atavism or true conservatism.

In short: narcissistic leadership is about theatre, not about life. To enjoy the spectacle (and be subsumed by it), the leader demands the suspension of judgment, depersonalization, and de-realization. Catharsis is tantamount, in this narcissistic dramaturgy, to self-annulment.

Narcissism is nihilistic not only operationally, or ideologically. It’s very language and narratives are nihilistic. Narcissism is conspicuous nihilism – and the cult’s leader serves as a role model, annihilating the Man, only to re-appear as a pre-ordained and irresistible force of nature.

Narcissistic leadership often poses as a rebellion against the “old ways” – against the hegemonic culture, the upper classes, the established religions, the superpowers, the corrupt order. Narcissistic movements are puerile, a reaction to narcissistic injuries inflicted upon a narcissistic (and rather psychopathic) toddler nation-state, or group, or upon the leader.

Minorities or “others” – often arbitrarily selected – constitute a perfect, easily identifiable, embodiment of all that is “wrong”. They are accused of being old, they are eerily disembodied, they are cosmopolitan, they are part of the establishment, they are “decadent”, they are hated on religious and socio-economic grounds, or because of their race, sexual orientation, origin … They are different, they are narcissistic (feel and act as morally superior), they are everywhere, they are defenseless, they are credulous, they are adaptable (and thus can be co-opted to collaborate in their own destruction). They are the perfect hate figure. Narcissists thrive on hatred and pathological envy.

This is precisely the source of the fascination with Hitler, diagnosed by Erich Fromm – together with Stalin – as a malignant narcissist. He was an inverted human. His unconscious was his conscious. He acted out our most repressed drives, fantasies, and wishes. He provides us with a glimpse of the horrors that lie beneath the veneer, the barbarians at our personal gates, and what it was like before we invented civilization. Hitler forced us all through a time warp and many did not emerge. He was not the devil. He was one of us. He was what Arendt aptly called the banality of evil. Just an ordinary, mentally disturbed, failure, a member of a mentally disturbed and failing nation, who lived through disturbed and failing times. He was the perfect mirror, a channel, a voice, and the very depth of our souls.

The narcissistic leader prefers the sparkle and glamour of well-orchestrated illusions to the tedium and method of real accomplishments. His reign is all smoke and mirrors, devoid of substances, consisting of mere appearances and mass delusions. In the aftermath of his regime – the narcissistic leader having died, been deposed, or voted out of office – it all unravels. The tireless and constant prestidigitation ceases and the entire edifice crumbles. What looked like an economic miracle turns out to have been a fraud-laced bubble. Loosely-held empires disintegrate. Laboriously assembled business conglomerates go to pieces. “Earth shattering” and “revolutionary” scientific discoveries and theories are discredited. Social experiments end in mayhem.

It is important to understand that the use of violence must be ego-syntonic. It must accord with the self-image of the narcissist. It must abet and sustain his grandiose fantasies and feed his sense of entitlement. It must conform with the narcissistic narrative.

Thus, a narcissist who regards himself as the benefactor of the poor, a member of the common folk, the representative of the disenfranchised, the champion of the dispossessed against the corrupt elite – is highly unlikely to use violence at first.

The pacific mask crumbles when the narcissist has become convinced that the very people he purported to speak for, his constituency, his grassroots fans, the prime sources of his narcissistic supply – have turned against him. At first, in a desperate effort to maintain the fiction underlying his chaotic personality, the narcissist strives to explain away the sudden reversal of sentiment. “The people are being duped by (the media, big industry, the military, the elite, etc.)”, “they don’t really know what they are doing”, “following a rude awakening, they will revert to form”, etc.

When these flimsy attempts to patch a tattered personal mythology fail – the narcissist is injured. Narcissistic injury inevitably leads to narcissistic rage and to a terrifying display of unbridled aggression. The pent-up frustration and hurt translate into devaluation. That which was previously idealized – is now discarded with contempt and hatred.

This primitive defense mechanism is called “splitting”. To the narcissist, things and people are either entirely bad (evil) or entirely good. He projects onto others his own shortcomings and negative emotions, thus becoming a totally good object. A narcissistic leader is likely to justify the butchering of his own people by claiming that they intended to kill him, undo the revolution, devastate the economy, or the country, etc.

The “small people”, the “rank and file”, the “loyal soldiers” of the narcissist – his flock, his nation, his employees – they pay the price. The disillusionment and disenchantment are agonizing. The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated – is drawn-out. It is difficult to trust again, to have faith, to love, to be led, to collaborate. Feelings of shame and guilt engulf the erstwhile followers of the narcissist. This is his sole legacy: a massive post-traumatic stress disorder.

V. First year in office

Predictably, Barack Obama’s narcissistic behavior grew worse and more visible during his first year in office. As I noted in a radio interview (an observation later picked up by George F. Will), Obama’s first person “pronoun density” has increased since his inauguration. Properly measured, first person pronoun density reflects the number of times a person substitutes first person pronouns for more appropriate third and other person pronouns. Thus, to say: “My country, right or wrong” is not indicative of a narcissistic self-preoccupation; but the sentence: “The Russians were afraid of me” is improper because, clearly, the Russians are not afraid of any single individual: they are afraid of what he or she represents. Thus, context counts. It is wrong to merely count the times Obama has used “I”, “my”, or “mine” in his speeches and utterances (as George F. Will did).

Obama’s pronoun density has doubled between January 20, 2009 and October 2009. It then subsided, though it is still about 50% over the level exhibited during his election campaign. This would seem to indicate that his pathological narcissism has been exacerbated in office as he was probably basking in media attention and the trappings of power. The backlash, such as it was, against several of his more egregious behaviors and faux-pas led him to modify his conduct and pay closer attention to his syntax and grammar: Obama is now acting modest. False modesty is another hallmark of raging, malignant narcissism.

Obama’s body language has become more pronounced and haughty while in office. For example: I measured the number of times he tilted his head upwards and in an angle during speeches and public appearances (literally gazing skywards and avoiding eye contact with his public). The frequency of this particular gesture increased dramatically (almost threefold!) this past year. It is part and parcel of the narcissist’s “haughty posture” and his attempt to project omniscience, vision, and a cosmic-messianic mission. Similarly telling gestures and postures have proliferated after Obama has assumed office.

Another sign of Obama’s growing malignant narcissism is his lowered Adversity Tolerance Threshold. I compared the number of times he snapped at critics and journalists during the election campaign and after he became President. The frequency of such temper tantrums has increased, though not drastically. Obama is still maintaining thespian self-control when it comes to the media and to his carefully-cultivated public image. Where he doesn’t bother anymore to project benevolence and maturity is with his staff: he is markedly and openly more aggressive and dismissive of his co-workers, underlings, crew, and team, clearly relishing his quasi-sadistic outbursts and their public verbal whipping.

I am not a mental health professional. Still, I have dedicated the last 12 years to the study of personality disorders in general and the Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) in particular. I have authored nine (9) books about these topics, one of which is a Barnes and Noble best-seller (“Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited”). My work is widely cited in scholarly tomes and publications and in the media. My books and the content of my Web site are based on correspondence since 1996 with hundreds of people suffering from the Narcissistic Personality Disorder (narcissists) and with thousands of their family members, friends, therapists, and colleagues.
