Has the Catholic Church changed?

Dani Dayan, chairman of Yad Vashem (World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Israel), held a private audience at the Vatican on June 9 with Pope Francis. Following the meeting, Dayan described the pope as a friend and an ally in the mission to defeat anti-Semitism. “It is the first time the pope has received, in a private audience, the chairman of Yad Vashem, and I think that this shows the world the importance that Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, attributes to the remembrance of the Holocaust and the fight against anti-Semitism,” Dayan said. While many hope that Jews will be able to live in peace—major conflicts are on the horizon.

“Never forget you have a friend here,” the pope told Dayan.

Pope Francis reiterates Rome’s centuries-old quest.

“Unity is harmony in the diversity of the charisma bestowed by the Spirit,” Pope Francis told the Pan-Orthodox delegation of priests and monks of the Oriental Autocephalous Churches on Friday, June 3. The churches primarily in the Middle East and Africa have often faced heavy persecution and have been separated for centuries from the mother church in Rome. Francis reminded the delegation of the Catholic Church’s goal toward “full unity” by centering his speech around this theme.

Violent crime is consuming America.

New York City might be America’s most iconic city. Its towering skyscrapers harken back to a time when the young republic was exploding with industrial growth and wealth. Oftentimes, New York was an immigrant’s first impression of America as he crossed the Atlantic and arrived at Staten Island. The city is a symbol of the prestige of the nation, the heart of financial America. Yet this symbol of pride and power is being overwhelmed by crime.
