Gimmicky Candles

Days after Gwyneth Paltrow’s online store “Goop” sold out of a genitalia-themed candle, “This Smells Like My 50 Year Old Vagina,” a penis-scented version has sprung up online.

Canadian ad agency Taxi unveiled the “This Smells Like My Penis” candle made from harvested “smegma” on its website, but it’s not to make the boys feel more included.

Finally, a win for the “patriarchy.” Why did they do it?

The agency created the candle, which is nearly identical to the $75 Goop product but priced at $100, as a way to highlight the “gender pay gap” in Canada.

“This candle costs 25 percent more than its vagina-smelling equivalent,” the site reads “because even though it’s illegal in Canada to pay women less than men, the gender pay gap smells as strong as ever.”

According to Taxi, Canadian women earn 75 cents for every dollar men make. In the United States, women earned 85 percent of what men earned in 2018, according to the Pew Research Center.

The replication, a copywriter for Taxi told Insider, is meant to represent the “absurdity” that Canadian women are still paid “less than men.”

“The Smells Like My Penis candle is no different from the Smells Like My Vagina candle, except for no apparent reason it’s worth 25 percent more. With the candle, we want to hammer home the point that Canadian women are still paid 75 cents on the dollar for the same work,” Allegra Weisenfeld told Insider.

The “pay gap” of course. Some would argue that penises smell at least 25% better than vaginas thus justifying the higher price, but then again, I get what they’re trying to do.

Personally, I don’t want to “smell” either of them. The vagina candle smells “tuna scented” and the penis candle smells like “cured smegma.”

Maybe a gimmicky candle is exactly what the Canadian government needed to “motivate” them to finally pass some meaningful legislation!

I guess all we can do at this point is thank Gwyneth Paltrow. She inadvertently started a movement simply by trying to “monetize” her 50 year old vagina.

Well done, Gwen. Well done.
